Miss Griscti’s Classroom

making parents feel apart of our classroom

By

October 27th

Hi All,

I hope everyone has had a fantastic week! We’ve been learning a lot! On Tuesday, we had an author visit that I think many of the students enjoyed. He told them a lot of the same things we talk about in writing. I think the kids were kind of surprised that I know what I am doing. J

With all this learning going on, I’ve noticed a few distractions. Many of the students are bringing baseball cards, rubber band necklaces they’ve created, etc. I love that they are so creative, but I ask that we keep these things at home. I’ve told the students if I have to collect these things, I will communicate this with parents. Thank you for your support!

EXCITING NEWS: We earned a popcorn party for the highest PTA attendance in 3rd grade (it was actually a tie with Mrs. Stewart/Culpepper’s class). Thank you all for your participation. We will celebrate with our popcorn party on Monday, November 6th! J

As many of you all saw in Tuesday Folders, this year the kiddos can dress up for Halloween. This is OPTIONAL, of course. However, please be sure if your child choses to dress up, they are able to perform everyday activities, participating in PE, recess, and using the restroom. Also, make-up, face paint, and masks are not allowed. Lastly, what the students come to school in is what they will wear throughout the day. There will be no costume or play clothes changes.

In addition to Halloween, next Thursday, 11/2, we have our wax museum presentations. Again, similar expectations are held, as far as costumes go. However, students will be allowed to change for recess (which will be at the end of the day). Please let me know if you need any materials, resources, etc. in order to help your child complete the wax museum project. Thursday evening will be the PTA meeting, where the students can come and present to the parents. This is OPTIONAL.

November is another fun month here at Rocky Mount. Together we share thanks with our Rocky Mount Thanksgiving feast on November 16th. Please click 2017 Thanksgiving Feast Lunch Schedule-1edg817 to view the schedule for our Thanksgiving Feast. Please note that this year, meals will NOT be prepaid. You will pay the day of, so please allow ample amount of time to park and purchase a meal ticket before joining us for the feast.

Please remember Tuesday, November 14th is our field trip to the Tellus Museum in Cartersville. If you have not done so already, please be sure to return the signed permission form. In addition, look out for an email regarding lunch count, so we can be sure to have an accurate count of sack lunches the day of the field trip.

Lastly, below is a message from Mrs. Lightstone:

Yesterday your children have a learning style inventory and strategy card in their planners from two classroom counseling sessions. Please let them discuss with you how they learn best and the strategies they can use to help them. When they talk to you they are reviewing the information, which creates a higher level of retention. Thank you.

If you have questions or observations, feel free to contact me at Sharon.lightstone@cobbk12.org.

What We Are Learning This Week:

Reading/ELA:

How do we recount stories and determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text?

How do we use features within a text to locate information relevant to a given topic quickly and efficiently?

How do we add suffixes to base words? How do we add prefixes to base words? How do we determine the meaning of a new word when an affix is added to a known root word?

Writing: How do we write informational text using clear organizational structure and develop a topic with relevant facts, definitions, and details?

How do we write routinely over extended and shorter time frames?

Math: How do we draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. How do we solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets?

Science: How do we observe and compare soil (clay, loam or potting soil, and sand) texture, particle size, and color? How do we explain through observations and research how water and wind can change rocks and soil over time (weathering and erosion)?

Hello All,

This week we began measuring area. We used our new garden beds to model breaking a rectangle into unit squares. We also used Cheez-Its as our unit squares in a fun, exploratory way. Please check out pictures on Live From the Red Carpet.

Please remember that this coming week is conference week and early release. We will also get an opportunity to visit the Book Fair, if you would like to send in money with your child. This is optional. Due to the fact that next week is early release, our lunch time has slightly changed. Next week it will be from 10:46-11:16 (one hour earlier than regular time). Please feel free to still come eat with your child. 🙂
